IP & Patent Litigation Paralegal Responsibilities: Follow the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the State and California Business & Professions Code Section 6450 et. seq. Manages document organization and production processes (hard copy and electronic). Collects materials from client, opposing parties, third parties, experts (hard copies, electronic data, physical evidence). Assists with the development and implementation of document review systems. Maintains chain of custody and manages logistics of production of documents (hard copy, electronic, native). Assists with Bates labeling, substantive indexing of documents and other tasks related to general discovery preparation. Prepares for depositions: conducts database searches and/or manual review of files to compile documents relevant to deponent; prepares witness files chronologically and/or by subject matter; organizes, prepares, and tracks exhibits. Maintains deposition transcripts and errata sheets in organized fashion. Assists with the preparation and filing of briefs, appeals and other legal documents: compiles appendices and exhibits, proofreads and cite checks for factual data, prepares table of authorities, files documents with court (hard copy and electronic). Prepares for and attends trial: organizes, prepares and tracks exhibits; assists with the preparation of attorney work product; prepares deposition designations; compiles exhibits related to direct and cross examination outlines; assists with the set-up of trial site logistics and other trial related projects as assigned. Implements and manages organizational systems to maintain case calendar, pleadings, correspondence and related case documents utilizing Firm software. Manages and maintains Litigation Support systems (Relativity, TextMap, Casemap, Extranets and third party platforms). Offers suggestions to attorneys regarding most effective technologies to manage client matters. Applies knowledge of litigation process, legal procedures, terminology, and experience to efficient completion of tasks. Analyzes documents and materials. Performs factual and legal research, transcript review, cite checking/shepardizing, proofreading of documents, etc. Prepares documents to include, but not limited to: privilege logs, binders, correspondence, reports to clients, document indices, abstracts, spreadsheets, and chronology of facts. Maintains solid working relationships with peers, support staff, attorneys, clients, etc. Responsible for overseeing other Paralegals, Project Assistants, legal secretaries, and/or temporary help, as needed. Monitors details and quality of others work. Supervises temporary employees, entry level Paralegals and/or Project Assistants on current assignments. Attends and assists in depositions, witness interviews, trials and court hearings. 15. Interacts with outside entities (clients, government agencies, expert witnesses, consultants, other law firms, opposing parties, court personnel, etc.) and manages relationships with supporting vendors (e-discovery, court reporters, trial support, etc.). Record billable and non-billable activities on a daily basis. Record 1600 client billable hours per calendar year, in accordance with Firm policy. For bonus purposes, 1600 client billable hours must be met before Business Development, CLE, training, mentoring, paralegal committee, professional development hours or other non-client billable time is applied. QUALIFICATIONS: College degree or equivalent experience required. 3+ years of experience as a paralegal working specifically on intellectual property and patent litigation matters required. Ability to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of California Business & Professions Code Section 6450, et. seq. Knowledge and understanding of legal principles and practices. Ability to work independently or as a team. Assumes responsibility for self and team. Anticipates needs, acts independently and asks questions or supervisors as needed. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with appropriate discretion. Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills. Ability to handle numerous tasks simultaneously, excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain and organize large volumes of data and documents. Strong oral and written communications skills. Display tact and good judgment. Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Familiarity with PowerPoint a plus. Intermediate to advanced understanding and proficiency with litigation support applications: Relativity and Livenote. Working knowledge of Casemap and Sanction is helpful. Knowledge of legal research tools, Westlaw, LexisNexis and Pacer. Intermediate working knowledge of e-discovery processes and software. Must be able to speak and interact positively with internal departments (IT, Litigation Support) and external vendors regarding electronic data, conversions, creation of databases, etc.
