Will be drafting and filing formal patent documents or administrative responses (missing parts, entity status change, issue fee payments, etc.) through EFS and ePCT. Corresponding with foreign counsels and foreign patent offices. Docketing (Pattsy). Sending out task reminders/appointments/meetings (Microsoft Outlook). Following up with attorneys. Inputting official fees and time entries and generating invoices (QuickBooks). Running accounting reports for A/R. Otherwise assisting in other administrative tasks to ensure a smooth office workflow. B.A./B.S. degree or similar is preferred. Experience handling administrative actions in patent applications is essential. Must have 1+ year of intellectual property law office experience in a similar position. Familiarity entering time/bills and invoicing in QuickBooks (or similar program) is essential. We’ve been told that they have a test that everyone must take before interviewing, and it’s quite difficult. The firm’s clients range from individual inventors and start-up companies to some of the world's largest multinational corporations. While there are some negative comments about the hours required, the hours seem commensurate with the salary, firm quality and work required.

Paralegal - Patent Prosecution The candidate will review office actions and other communications from patent offices and reporting same to client. Will prepare office action response shells for attorney. Prepare formal documents, forward to client for signature, and file with various patent offices. Daily monitor docket and take appropriate steps to clear deadlines. Work closely with the docketing staff to ensure all dates are docketed. Communicate with USPTO personnel as needed. Handle and process foreign associate invoices. The candidate must have Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of experience with patent docketing and/or prosecution administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience with Intellectual Property filing and prosecution rules and regulations. Should meet requirements to be considered a paralegal in the state of California. Must be versed in all facets of patent prosecution, including U.S., PCT, non-PCT convention, and national stage filings. Should have experience in patent prosecution and with a focus on filing US and foreign patent documents in a variety of countries. Solid experience filing patent applications is required. Should have strong knowledge of Windows-based software applications, including MS Word, Excel and Outlook; document management systems, including Worksite (or iManage), docketing systems, such as CPi. Knowledge of US and foreign procedures and processes relating to patent prosecution and filing patent applications is required. Experience working in a law firm environment is needed. Knowledge and execution of US patent filings via EFS is essential. Knowledge and management of foreign patent prosecution and working with foreign agents is a must.
