Litigation Paralegal Manager Duties: Responsible for the day-to-day activities across multiple offices for the litigation paralegals and case assistants. Assessments, strategic management of workflow and work assignments, capacity planning, and goal setting. Will oversee recruiting, hiring, training, assignment of cases/projects and performance evaluations. Responsible for increasing and maximizing the utilization, efficiency and effectiveness of the paralegals in the litigation department, including the development and implementation of training and professional development. Availability for travel is required. Reviews diaries and monitors billable and non-billable hours, overtime, realization and expenses for paralegal group. Develops and analyzes metrics and financial reports to effectively manage group costs and find opportunities to increase profitability of the paralegal group. Strategically analyzes group staffing needs and capacity planning, including recruitment and hiring of new staff, staffing for client matters, projects and group work flow. Partners with practice groups, attorneys and senior leadership to identify expanded opportunities for paralegal utilization and cross-office leverage. Maintains ongoing communication with the Director of Legal Services on the status of group workload, hours, profitability, utilization, marketing, and professional development. Works closely with the Director of Legal Services on setting and implementing strategic goals established by firm, department and individual. Collects real-time feedback for all paralegals, conducts performance evaluations and makes recommendations for bonuses, merit increases and promotions. Targets paralegal development needs in response to performance issues, manages and resolves personnel problems and handles disciplinary actions. Serves as a career counselor for the growth and development of the coordinators, paralegals and case assistants. Seeks out and advocates for growth opportunities for group. Actively coaches and partners with paralegals and case assistants on their ongoing workloads identifying opportunities for expanded matter support, improved efficiencies, and attainment of professional goals. Oversees the litigation paralegal training curriculum. Identifies areas of training for the group and partners with the litigation paralegal coordinators and track leaders on development, maintenance and presentation of litigation specific training programs. Provides on-going training and mentoring. Identifies additional resources for individual paralegal growth and development. Develops and implements effective and comprehensive orientation program and on-boarding process for new hires. Works closely with other firm departments such as Human Resources, Litigation Technology, Legal Project Management and Records to ensure that effective work processes are followed. Acts as a resource to all members of the litigation department to provide support, guidance and motivation. Facilitates administrative resources. Serves as a representative of the litigation department on firm committees/task forces as designated by Director. Assists Director, practice group managers and leaders with department initiatives and projects as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, 10+ years litigation experience, and a substantial and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the litigation process and e-discovery. Prior legal supervisory experience required. Must also have proficiency with automated litigation support technology, large, complex case document collection, review and production experience and trial experience. Must demonstrate the ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the firm's internal and personnel affairs. Able to interact and collaborate effectively with all levels of personnel, including management staff and support staff. Possesses strong oral and written communication skills. Able to manage and lead a team. Able to be a proactive self-starter, who understands the details within a much larger context. Serves as a resource, facilitator and mentor in order to effectively support the needs of the department. Must be flexible in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities. Able to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple, detailed tasks. Must be able to anticipate problems and issues and exercise independent judgment to make sound, justifiable decisions and take action in solving problems while knowing when and to whom to escalate issues. Must be team-oriented and able to share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.Able to influence at all levels of the organization. Possesses excellent attention to detail and follows up and follows through on deliverables. Owns professional development by seeking out feedback and learning new skills. Takes ownership of deliverables and is accountable. Able to maintain a professional demeanor in all situations. Able to work effectively in a multi-office environment and a culturally and educationally diverse environment.
