Law Firms Need to Be Aware of Risks of Web 2.0
Howrey Bonuses Unaffected by Economy
Howrey managing partner, Robert Ruyak, had a welcome surprise for his non-lawyer staff on Thursday morning. The staff, under the impression they were attending a normal quarterly staff meeting, were taken pleasantly aback at the turn of events. Instead of Ruyak reading and discussing reports, he announced that all non-lawyer staff would be receiving a $1,000 bonus this year. Ruyak meant the bonuses as a thank-you for his staff whose members have worked so hard during a financially difficult year. Touched by the good news some members gasped while others were seen in tears. It is good to see Howrey's generosity has not taken a hit from the poor economy this year.
Sonnenschein Continues to Grow
Despite a weakening economy, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal is continuing to expand its firm. Striving since 2006 to increase the range of services they provide, Sonnenschein has added 100 more lawyers in the past 10 days to their firm. In a large deal which involved lots of negotiations, Sonnenschein was able to acquire about forty partners in the 100-lawyer addition from Thacher Proffitt & Wood. Sonnenschein's is still 200 lawyers shy of its ultimate goal of being a 1,000-lawyer firm, but they look forward to more growth in 2009. Cutting positions in departments with soft client demand has helped strengthen the core of Sonnenschein, even as they expand the departments with higher demand.
