Litigation Paralegal The candidate performs a variety of duties including researching the law, investigating facts, and preparing documents for attorneys according to established policies and procedures. Obtains necessary authorizations for medical records (requires knowledge regarding HIPAA regulations. Identifies healthcare providers from whom to obtain pertinent records. Collects, organize, safeguard and electronically store medical records and imaging whilst maintaining an inventory log of the same. Prepares initial discovery, i.e., interrogatories, request for production, request for admissions. Vet and engage with subject matter experts. Journal deadlines for responses and monitor for timeliness. Prepares draft responses to discovery, including document productions and corresponding privilege logs. Prepares legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, chronologies, agreements, deposition summaries/abstracts, and trial and/or mediation binders for use by attorneys. Investigates facts as requested by attorneys. Ensures proper indexing and filing of original legal documents. Prepares trial exhibits. Schedule and prepare expert lay witnesses for trial. Attends trial, as necessary. Writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs. Listens and seeks clarification; responds well to questions. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality. Synthesizes complex or diverse information; Collects and researches data. Takes independent actions and calculated risks; asks for help when needed. Follows instructions, responds to management direction; commits to additional hours of work when necessary to reach goals. Balances team and individual responsibilities; contributes to building a positive team environment. Focuses on solving conflict, not blaming. Maintains confidentiality. Accepts responsibility for own actions; follows through on commitments. Acts as a case manager, moving the case along, anticipating next steps, and proactively discussing same with attorneys. A High School diploma or equivalent is required; Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Five (5) or more years of civil defense litigation experience is required. Experience in personal injury, property damage, and medical malpractice preferred. Should have experience with trial preparation and participation/attendance, including organization of witness materials and preparation of physical and electronic exhibits; knowledge of complex litigation (i.e. medical malpractice, construction, products liability); working knowledge of the rules and procedures of IL and MO State and Federal Court systems (including experience in eFiling). Demonstrated proficiency in the use of the internet, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe, iManage; working knowledge of Relativity. Should have a strong background in trial preparation and attendance at trial. Continual review and management of case files.
