Paralegal - Probate/trust Administration/Tax/ Guardianship/Conservatorship Duties: Works under the supervision of a licensed attorney, assists the attorney in a capacity or function which involves the performance of delegated substantive legal, accounting, and tax work. Prepares complex and confidential documents and correspondence with minimal instruction; drafts probate, guardianship, conservatorship, trust administration, and estate planning documents (pleadings, tax forms, trusts, wills, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, living wills, etc.) for the attorney's review. Prepares accountings for court approval; prepares estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax returns; assists with the transfer of assets into trusts and with other asset distributions; organizes and indexes documents; meets and communicates with clients and client advisors; records deeds with accompanying transfer documents. Maintains client files; directs staff regarding docketing, scheduling, administrative issues and processing vendor and expert invoices; directs support staff to process outgoing communication and/or large documents based on priority needs of the client, in the most cost effective manner. Performs legal research utilizing library reference materials, RIA Checkpoint, Lexis, or Westlaw; proofreads all work product for grammar and punctuation; manages incoming documents and ensures docketing for disclosure if needed. Apprises attorney of upcoming deadlines and receives instructions for obtaining the same; continually updates legal knowledge by attending relevant continuing legal education and/o tax classes; adheres to departmental/firm goals and policies; overtime may be required during periods of high workload; flexibility in daily work schedule is required. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualification Requirements: (A)A paralegal certificate or degree from an ABA-approved paralegal program, with high marks in a probate or trusts-and-estates course, and with significant experience in accounting or tax; or (B) A four-year degree with a B" or higher grade average (3.0+ on a 4.0 GPA scale) from an accredited college, and with significant experience in accounting or tax; or (C) Substantial work experience roughly equivalent to (A) or (B) above (such as 3-5 years of applicable paralegal or tax work). A four-year degree in Accounting with a B+ (3.4 on a 4.0 scale) or higher average, and/or professional tax return preparation or other tax compliance experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge of policies, procedures and legal, accounting, and tax terminology. Superior organizational skills and flexibility. Ability to maintain professional interpersonal relationships with clients, colleagues, and ancillary personnel.
