Paralegal Responsibilities: Organizes, manages, and updates client files (electronic and paper copies). Researches insurance industry topics in business publications through the use of databases such as LEXIS/NEXIS. Assists in the maintenance of practice group document libraries. Researches topics addressed in (i) state insurance codes, (ii) state insurance department regulations, (iii) state insurance department bulletins and other pronouncements, and (iv) state case law, affecting insurance companies and insurance agents, brokers, and other insurance professionals. Compiles relevant deal documents for archiving in bound volume or electronic form. Files applications for insurance regulatory approval, including, without limitation, licenses, registrations, mergers and acquisitions, anti-fraud plans, and corporate reorganizations. Tracks and meets filing deadlines set by various state insurance departments. Contacts examiners and lawyers at various state insurance departments to obtain required information on both an identified and a no names basis. Obtains information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and insurance trade organizations, such as the Reinsurance Association of America, the American Insurance Association, the American Council of Life Insurers, and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies. Assists lawyers and business development staff in crafting pitch materials. Obtains information about particular insurance companies through entities. Creates corporations and liaises with vendors. Requirements: Bachelor's Degree. 5+ years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience during which knowledge, skills and abilities applicable to the position were demonstrated. Experience in the legal services practice area of Insurance/Reinsurance, required. Knowledge of Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) rules and regulations. Ability to communicate factual information and legal research results to attorneys and clients clearly and concisely in oral and written/email communications and through spreadsheets. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements. Ability to apply technical knowledge or guidance, analyze and interpret data from several sources to solve problems by applying precedent or extrapolating from previous experience. Strong attention to detail, including superior spelling and grammar. Experience proofreading documents drafted by attorneys. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and with others in a cooperative manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts. Ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external contacts. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with attorneys and clients. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Basic knowledge of records management. Moderate typing skills.
