Trial Paralegal/Legal Assistant DUTIES: Communicates in accordance with, and understanding of, applicable State Bar rules related to protected information, confidentiality, and the unauthorized practice of law. Complies with corresponding company policies and procedures. Maintains a professional, courteous demeanor and provides excellent customer service to CR Legal Team's external and internal clients. Obtains pertinent case information and data from the client; analyzes, reviews, and prepares the data/information into case notes. Provides assistance with trial administrative support to the assigned litigation team during trial case workup and trial preparation. Maintains excellent professional relations and interfaces with clients, witnesses, defense attorneys, court staff, vendors and co-workers according to practice group procedure. All communications, case developments and pertinent case related information is documented pursuant to operating procedure. Assists Litigation Team(s) with trial-related tasks and processes such as, scheduling expert and trial witness appearances, arbitration preparation, trial-related motions and oppositions, trial scheduling and continuances, trial subpoenas, exhibits, oral and written advocacy. May assist with conducting research and other details in preparation for trials, hearings, or other legal proceedings. May assist with legal briefs, memorandums, pretrial and post-trial motions, jury instructions and verdict forms. Prepares legal and court documents; schedules and attends appropriate trial preparation meetings and case events; may interface with the client on non-legal issues relating to trial or the management of the case; refers legal issues to the appropriate legal team(s). Conducts preparation for legal proceedings, including mediations, arbitrations, hearings and trial; submits appropriate information and legal forms/documents to the appropriate organizations; understands forms and procedures relating to field of expertise. Prepares trial preparation checklists, attends trial preparation meetings with assigned legal team(s), circulates assignment of tasks and action items, maintains communication with assigned legal team(s) regarding status of trial related action items. Assists assigned legal team(s) with review of trial strategies, witness statements, outlines for opening and closing arguments, development of evidence and exhibits. May attend trial preparation meetings with attorneys, clients, assigned legal team. Assists attorney at trial: marshaling of evidence and witnesses during trial proceedings, note taking during trial, assists with monitoring jury reactions to trial testimony, assists with trial technology, IT setup and presentations. Notifies legal team(s) when forms, documents, correspondence and other pertinent information/material are received and completes any necessary associated tasks. Manages and utilizes the checklist daily, maintaining due items within operating procedure. Interfaces with other team members to achieve office and departmental goals; may provide back up to other team members, including but not limited to client meetings and video conferences, as designated by the assigned Supervisor. Processes mail daily to review any additional information pertinent to the cases being managed; determines and enters any necessary case notes for items received; addresses with legal team(s) as appropriate. Interacts with the client to ensure that all appropriate reports, records, and information to include, but not limited to, medical records, bills, wages, insurance information, etc. are received from the client in a timely manner. May assist with case settlement, confirming balances and expenses; preparing settlement documents for review by the Attorney(s) and client(s). Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 6 months to 1-year prior litigation experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Trial preparation experience preferred. Background checks will be conducted on all final candidates for employment. Ability to effectively utilize available technology, including computers, databases, portals, and software needed to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Must be able to multi-task and to effectively communicate, problem-solve and to overall handle tasks timely and tactfully with all staff levels and the public. Must be able to adapt to a wide range of diverse internal and external clientele.
