Paralegal/Legal Assistant The candidate will be responsible for assisting the firm Attorneys in obtaining, reviewing and organizing electronically stored information in support of litigation, case evaluation and intakes. Reviews and processes incoming material and, based on established office policy and procedure, determines the need for assembly and preparation of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels. Obtains required information from files or general reference sources, and submits completed legal documents to the appropriate attorney. Complies variable aspects of recurring legal documents in conformance with the rules governing their style and format. Develops tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format. Accurately cites to authoritative cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs. Modifies previously established pleadings, motions, and letters to meet immediate needs that require knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants. Based on specific requests and instructions, uses general reference sources and legal research tools lo gather information to assist attorneys in performing legal research duties. Schedules appointments, meetings, engagements, and conferences. Receives and reviews incoming correspondence and forwards each item to the appropriate attorney or to other staff based on a knowledge of the duties and functions - Receives telephone calls and visitors, screening those which can be handled without help. Personally takes care of many matters and questions relating to office functions, procedures and practices. Maintains legal and general office files. Reviews, screens and controls incoming mail. Independently deals with those matters addressed to the unit that do not require the attention of legal. Reviews outgoing correspondence for procedural and grammatical accuracy, format, and presentation. Brings errors to the attention of the writer. Searches files for material used in recurring reports. Assembles file data or secures data from staff members into the proper format based on the purpose and nature of the report. Makes travel arrangements. Secures accommodations and maintains contact while the attorney is in travel status. Produces written documents utilizing a range of office automation software. Retrieves required information from various files and records and prepares legal documents with complicated formatting. Ensures proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. Consults with document author to resolve questionable material. Using office software provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys by preparing charts and other specialized materials relating to trial preparation and presentations. Performs other related services as assigned. Associate s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in paralegal studies, public administration, business administration or any field and two (2) years of paralegal experience or directly related legal support experience; Substitutions for experience and/or education are allowed. 4 years of paralegal experience or directly related legal support experience. Substitutions for experience and/or education are allowed are required. . Experience using document management and litigation support software in support of civil litigation matters are required. Excellent written communications skills as demonstrated in cover letter are required. Experience using computerized legal research databases are required. Paralegal certificate are required.
