Paralegal DUTIES: Interviews workers, organizers and others and prepares declarations or reports on results. Arranges complex and detailed travel plans and itineraries, compiles documents for litigation and accompanies attorney when requested. With guidance as needed from an attorney, prepares for and handles basic administrative agency cases and arbitration hearings (from intake to post hearing briefs). Assists attorneys developing case strategy. Conducts basic legal research for attorneys. Writes legal memoranda for attorneys and/or clients. Maintains communication with clients. Assists Attorney with preparing and organizing discovery issues and case preparation. Analyzes facts, law and evidence. Participates in the development and execution of research projects. Answers questions and provides information on companies and industries to support organizing and bargaining efforts. This information includes: financial, corporate, market and power structure analysis; assessment of political, legislative, regulatory, and community organizing opportunities. Prepares reports, leaflets, memos, articles for publication, speeches, testimony, correspondence and other material for use inside and outside the UFW. Monitors federal, state and local regulatory and legislative developments relevant to strategic campaigns. Planning & Administration. Prepares case files, including files for litigation. Locate, collect and copy court documents. Research, report and interpret Local Rules, Rules of Court, Wage Orders, Codes and Administrative Regulations. Coordinates and arranges administrative support for litigation. Updates reference materials and maintains research databases and files. Available to work a flexible schedule to interview witnesses, clients and assist in litigation. Effectively handles detail oriented and multi-tasks. Independently follows up and follows through on projects. Independently tracks key information with relevant agencies and reports to in-house staff accordingly. Plans, prioritizes and organizes projects effectively. Attends relevant trainings, as instructed, and shares information with other staff. Attends professional/industry conferences and meetings. Major Relationships. Maintains key relationships with relevant organizational counterparts. Develops and maintains relationships with key vendors. Develops and maintains relationships with key persons in relevant agencies. Communicates with researchers in other organizations. Maintains relationships with organizational, business and government contacts. Provides guidance to Legal Assistants, Paralegal assistants, administrative project staff, and others, as needed. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates are required to have completed 2 years of college education (that, if completed, would earn a Bachelor's degree) or have passed the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) with grades meeting minimum standards set by the California Committee of Bar Examiners. Proficiency with computers including MS word, excel, outlook and internet. Demonstrated commitment to working for social change and economic justice and sensitivity to Union principles and farm worker issues. Sound judgment; ability to work with diverse clients and maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to follow up, track and calendar deadlines with appropriate reminders. Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel as needed throughout California with personal vehicle. Excellent communication skills: both oral and written. Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish and English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to write reports, correspondence, basic motions, pleadings, briefs and other documents related to litigation and/or arbitrations. Requires ability to effectively present information and to respond to questions from clients, agencies, the general public, and other attorneys. Ability to read and interpret relevant Codes, regulations and other legal documents. Ability to synthesize information and explain it in simple and clear language. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and deal with non-verbal symbolism (formulas, graphs, etc.). Requires the ability to type at a rate of 40+ wpm.
