The San Francisco office of this mid-size firm is engaged primarily in litigation and general business, although the firm boasts a solid regulatory and administrative law practice and a respectable labor/employment practice. The firm has a strong pro bono commitment; associates receive full billable hour credit for approved pro bono work and, overall, pro bono comprises 3-5% of all work. The billable hour target is 1850 and salaries are approximately 20% below market.
ERISA/Employee Benefits Paralegal The candidate will assist attorneys with a variety of employee benefit plan projects, including both retirement plans and health and welfare plans. Will be drafting and amending employee benefit plan documents, including prototype retirement plan documents and ERISA wrap documents. Prepare regulatory filings, such as IRS determination letter filings and voluntary correction filings. Assist clients with regulatory audits (IRS, DOL or PBGC). Communication (in person, by telephone and in writing) with clients to obtain information required for plan amendments, regulatory filings and regulatory audits. Preparation and transmittal of all necessary papers for regulatory filings. Researching retirement plan and certain welfare plan issues. Other responsibilities as client needs dictate. Bachelor's degree and paralegal certificate or appropriate job-related experience required. Must have 5 years of experience working in employee benefits. Working knowledge of the design and operation of retirement plans and some working knowledge of health and welfare plans are required. Working knowledge of legal requirements applicable to retirement and welfare benefits (e.g., ERISA and Internal Revenue Code) required. Certification as an Employee Benefits Paralegal or Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) preferred. Must have excellent organizational, communication, analytical and critical thinking skills.
