Tax, Benefits and Estates Paralegal Duties: Helping to manage and organize the materials and information relating to the tax aspects of matters, transactions, and tax controversy matters. Researching ERISA, IRC, and DOL questions as requested by attorneys. Preparing, and/or reviewing materials for government filings, especially applications for determination letters, voluntary correction applications and Form 5500s. Updating and maintaining inventory of plan documents, plan amendments and important filings and communications for clients. Drafting retirement plans, welfare plans, amendments and summaries for attorney review. Responding to issues with QDROS. Assisting in preparation of tax exemption filings, pre-screening applications and preparing submissions for tax exempt status. Managing response process for DOL/IRS and state regulatory agency requirements and exams. Conducting legal research and analysis of Tax and ERISA requirements related to retirement plans. Document production review and indexing. Organizing and compiling client-related documentation. Reviewing and summarizing depositions and hearing transcripts. Reviewing, indexing and summarizing FOIA production from IRS. Preparing various IRS and State Level Forms. Assisting with trial exhibits and preparation. Assisting with drafting of correspondence and court filings. Maintaining client related electronic files. Conducting Case Law research. Scheduling of conferences, client related meetings and other court appearances. Requirements: Bachelor's Degree or paralegal certificate or designations. 3+ years of experience as a paralegal or in other legal/tax services roles. Strong oral and written communication skills. Proficient using Excel, Word and other database and document assembly software. Must be detail oriented, efficient, and able to coordinate multifaced projects with minimum supervision. Proficiency in Lexis or Westlaw and web-based research strongly preferred. Ability to problem solve, set priorities and to ask questions when needed. Ability to meet tight deadlines. Demonstrates persistence to overcome obstacles. Availability to work overtime as needed. Experience with the Internal Revenue Code and ERISA preferred. Experience with health and welfare benefit compliance and familiarity with IRS and DOL rules including ERISA, ACA, COBRA and HIPAA preferred. Working knowledge of the general retirement plan qualification rules under IRC Section 401 and ERISA preferred.
