Legal Assistant/Paralegal The candidate's most important tasks is helping the lawyer prepare for hearings and trials. This may include creating motion or trial notebooks, and organizing discovery. The legal assistant also opens, organizes and tracks files; making them available and easily accessible to the attorney. In addition to this preparatory work, the legal assistant performs a number of other functions. For example, they help prepare discovery, affidavits, Initial Case Management Data sheets, respond to interrogatories, coordinate requests between counsel, prepare correspondences, and other pleadings associated with the case. Additional duties include file management including creating, archiving, and transferring files, pulling files for incoming correspondence and other special projects as needed. The legal assistant will maintain the attorney calendar by planning and scheduling conferences, teleconferences, depositions, motion hearings and travel; recording and monitoring court appearance dates, and pleadings deadlines.The legal assistant will maintain client confidence by keeping client/attorney information confidential, welcome guests and clients by greeting them in person or on the telephone; answering or directing inquiries. The legal assistant will perform quality control to assure that all pleadings, correspondences and other documents are edited and formatted in a professional manner. This position must utilize the highest and best practice of technology whenever possible. This requires an advanced command of the latest Word program, Excel and the ability to create spreadsheets, File Share, scanning, creating PDF documents, time entry on legal software, production of information by transcribing, formatting, inputting, editing, retrieving, copying, and transmitting text, data, and graphics; coordinating case preparation. The legal assistant must have at least 2 years of experience in general litigation, an associate degree in legal secretarial studies or paralegal studies, or an associate's degree coupled with a certificate in paralegal studies; or Certification from a professional association such as The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Certified Legal Assistant (CLA); orCertified Paralegal (CP) credential; or American Alliance Certified Paralegal (AACP) credential; or Registered Paralegal (RP). Excellent Writing Skills Required (including formatting, grammar and spelling).
