Paralegal/Legal Secretary The candidate will be docketing of pleadings and other court documents, including calculating when responses or replies are due; the filing of pleadings and other court documents with the federal courts, state courts and various administrative bodies; drafting of pleadings and orders; coordinating with court staff and personnel; organizing the firm's files, case records, and documents produced through discovery; and assisting our attorney's in coordinating and tracking their legal education requirements. We are a natural resources/property rights-oriented law firm with clients all over the West, so we have had litigation in all the western federal district and federal circuit courts of appeals, the Wyoming Supreme Court and the Wyoming state district courts. We have written briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court. We do work before the Department of the Interior's Office of Hearings and Appeals, Wyoming's Department of Environmental Quality, and the State Engineer's Board of Control. We also work on issues relating to minerals (surface use agreements), easements/condemnation and estate planning. In addition to docketing and e-filing legal briefs we also ask our paralegal to do a wide variety of legal and factual research including looking at county records for various mineral interests or a chain of title for a piece of land, legal research related to state or federal law, legislative history for federal statutes, and other miscellaneous research. We use Westlaw for our online research. It would also be important to know how to use a Bluebook or to write proper forms of legal citations. Applicants for this position should have excellent computer/word processing skills; a good understanding of the Federal and Wyoming Rules of Civil Procedure; ability to file court documents through various e-filing systems; and be a team player to assist other staff with answering phones, getting out bills and other duties.
