Tax and Benefits Paralegal Duties: Assists attorneys in employee benefits and related areas of the law. This position requires working with clients and attorneys on employee benefit plans, executive compensation, multiemployer retirement and health and welfare plans by assisting attorneys in the preparation of legal instruments and related administrative filings in a deadline-sensitive environment. Reports and is responsible to the Tax and Benefits Department Chair and attorneys within the department. Assist attorneys with employee retirement, health and welfare plan design and strategy and understand federal, state and local compliance issues. Assist with compliance audits and benefits administration/process improvement reviews. Assist with preparation of presentations and reports on the changing laws and the impact on employers and their benefit plans. Draft qualified retirement plan documents and trust agreements, including amendments and restatements, to comply with law and regulations or client requests. Develop and review summary plan descriptions. Prepare and edit other employee/participant communications related to employee benefit plans. Review and assist with processing qualified domestic relations orders submitted to SLK clients and interact with domestic relations attorneys Draft welfare benefit plans, including cafeteria plans, medical reimbursement plans, dependent care assistance plans, and health care plans. Draft board of directors resolutions for plan adoption, adoption of amendments, contribution amounts, and other actions required to be taken by the board. Manage employer delinquency and collection litigation and maintain deadlines. Coordinate signature of employee benefit plan documents with clients and manage record retention for employee benefit plans maintained by SLK. Assist in preparing and coordinate general notice mailings to clients about potential impact of new legal developments upon plans. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an ABA approved Paralegal program. 0-5 years experience tax and benefits law practice. Strong understanding of employee benefits terms and technological skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Superior research skills, including the use of online services, databases and the Internet. Superior organizational skills. Project and case management skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines.
