Bilingual Immigration Paralegal Duties: Handle incoming client calls from clients, usually in Spanish. Screen potential clients to decide if their situation meets our guidelines for an appointment with our attorneys. Meet with clients to gather documents, complete immigration forms, interview clients, and draft client statements for attorney review. Translate letters and other short documents (a translation service handles large or complex translations). Occasionally deliver legal documents to various courts and government agencies in San Francisco. Write short letters to companies, institutions and government agencies to request court records, medical reports, and school records. Follow up by phone when necessary. Qualifications: A four-year college degree from a U.S.-based school with at least a 2.75 GPA. College grads planning on graduate / law school are welcome to apply, but should be available to work for 2+ years to justify the investment by the firm in paralegal training. After sufficient training and experience, our paralegals prepare various legal papers, such as pleading caption pages, list of exhibits, etc., and occasionally assists attorneys in researching social, economic conditions, and human rights conditions in the client's home country. Track case progress in Excel spreadsheets. A successful candidate must be detail oriented and highly organized to manage the status of hundreds of open cases. Fluency in English. Good writing skills. Near-native fluency in spoken Spanish. At least a beginner level in written Spanish. Good interpersonal communication skills. Possess confidence and skills to interview clients. Typing at 40+ WPM. Schedule: Willingness to work one Saturday per month. (Take a day off during the week, but work that Saturday.)
