The San Francisco office of this mid-size firm is engaged primarily in litigation and general business, although the firm boasts a solid regulatory and administrative law practice and a respectable labor/employment practice. The firm has a strong pro bono commitment; associates receive full billable hour credit for approved pro bono work and, overall, pro bono comprises 3-5% of all work. The billable hour target is 1850 and salaries are approximately 20% below market.
Attorney Development and Retention Manager - Litigation The candidate designs and implements firm-wide professional development opportunities for attorneys in the Litigation department. Works with the Director of Attorney Development and Retention and Litigation department leadership on issues related to attorney retention, morale, workflow/workload, communication, and all associate processes, such as the attorney evaluation process, attorney compensation/bonus process, and income partner election process Has a major role in providing a supportive, professional environment for all attorneys in the department, and serves as a resource throughout their careers at the firm. Develops curricula for attorneys in accordance with identified needs and in consultation with Practice Group Leaders, Partners and individuals in firm management. Designs professional development programming to support curricula, core competencies and incidental training needs. Works with the department Heads, Business Manager, Practice Group Leaders and Local Litigation Coordinators to develop initiatives that ensure proper associate development and satisfaction within the Litigation department. Develops curricula for attorneys in the Litigation department in accordance with identified needs and in consultation with department Heads, Practice Group Leaders, Local Litigation Coordinators, Partners and individuals in firm management. Designs professional development programming to support curricula, core competencies and incidental training needs. Rotates with other AD&R Managers in leading annual firm wide attorney programs and retreats. Sources program faculty and develops program content in conjunction with faculty to ensure it meet the firm s high standards. Works directly with the Director of Attorney Development and Retention on issues related to new attorney integration, retention, morale, communications, and other attorney issues. Works directly with the Director of Attorney Development and Retention on the firm wide annual attorney evaluation and compensation and bonus processes. Participates in local and firm-wide Professional Personnel Committee meetings during the compensation and bonus process. Provides guidance to associates related to the processes above. Acts as a sounding board for other career issues including integration, workload, development, work-life balance and other issues. Works in conjunction with the department Heads, Practice Leaders, and Director of Attorney Development and Retention to identify attorney coaching needs. Coordinates coaching engagements with external coaches in various areas. Facilitates feedback conversations between partners and associates, and periodic practice group or department meetings during which associate development issues are discussed. Collaborates with the department leadership, Director of Attorney Development and Retention and RHR to address attorney performance issues. Counsels attorneys through Performance Improvement Plans. Oversees the peer and partner mentorship programs. Works with RHR to determine appropriate mentor pairings. Collaborates with other AD&R team members on creation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of internal website, communication vehicles, e-learning, and other training resources. Stays abreast of trends in attorney career and professional development through the PDC and NALP Foundation, among others. Other tasks as assigned by Director of Attorney Development and Retention, PPC Chair or other members of firm management/leadership. Should have a J.D. degree. Relevant experience in Litigation practice area is preferred. Must have 3+ years of experience in a law firm environment, preferably as an attorney or in the training, marketing or career development fields. Should have ability to travel as needed.
