Family Law Paralegal The candidate drafts pleadings, legal correspondence, motions, agreements, and orders. Complete legal forms. Communicate with clients by phone, email and in-person to provide clients with case updates. Gather information from clients to ensure that the firm has the necessary documentation to best serve and understand the client s needs. Schedule some client calls and meetings. Assure that the attorneys calendars are accurately maintained and organized in a logical and efficient manner. Interact with the courts and administrative agencies regarding hearings, mediations, motions and other appearances. Function as the courts primary point of contact with the firm for all administrative and scheduling issues. Draft, send and/or e-file correspondence and basic pleadings. Prepare discovery and responses to discovery demands. Docket and schedule events. Add ticklers/reminders to attorney and firm calendars as necessary. Schedule mediations, hearings, trials, meetings, as necessary with court, opposing counsel, clients, staff and attorneys. Help the attorney prepare the client and the file for court and/or mediation. Assist the attorney during hearings and trials. Research laws and judicial decisions about current as well as past cases. Draft memos for attorney summarizing research on legal issues. Review pending legislation. Serve as witness or notary as necessary. Manage the attorneys mail and email. Retrieve and review mail for assigned attorneys. Assure that copies are included in the firm s client file (paper, electronic, or both). Send a PDF of the mail to the client (if applicable). Notify attorneys of email necessitating attorney attention along with appropriate time frames for action or response. Manage the firm faxes. Send a PDF of the mail to the client (if applicable). Notify attorneys of faxes necessitating attorney attention along with appropriate time frames for action or response, or takes appropriate action upon attorney approval. Draft legal correspondence as directed by attorneys. Put documents initially drafted by attorneys into final form, ready to be delivered to court, clients, and co-counsel and opposing counsel. Organize the attorneys files. Assure that the client file is organized and ready (including exhibits) in advance of court, mediation or other outside attorney meetings. Assist Legal Assistant in creating, updating and managing client file and/or trial binder: Prepares and maintains electronic client file or trial binder; Prepares and maintains physical client file or trial binder; Help prepare client file or trial binder for court, including exhibits; scans and/or makes copies of documents. Create and update firm forms, templates and checklists. Enter time, expenses and billing data. A bachelor s degree is required. Competent and highly proficient in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel and Access) required.
