A branch office of a regional mid-west law firm, whose clients range from one person, to start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. This is a full service firm that has offices throughout the mid-west. This is a great, contentious firm that dedicates a portion of its lawyers’ billable hours to do pro bono work. This is a nice place to work, and people are quite friendly. The firm hires from both regional and national law schools, and values an attorney’s personality and diversity of experience.
Legal Assistant or Paralegal Duties: Draft estate planning documents including Wills, Trusts, Agreements, Powers of Attorney and ancillary planning documents. Prepare probate estate and trust documents such as petitions, motions, domiciliary letters, inventories, accountings and notices, fiduciary income and estate tax returns. Maintain positive relations with clients through regular communication; gather information, answer questions, provide status updates; communicating with clients as to billing issues and status of matters. Transcribe, type, proofread and finalize legal documents, correspondence, memos, charts, billings and reports from dictation, handwritten or existing documents, as directed by assigned legal staff. Utilize software programs for billable time entry, maintain billing records and open new client accounts. Create accountings and reports using Excel. Prepare letters/emails to clients. Requirements: Paralegal certificate or Associate or Bachelor's Degree in accounting or tax related coursework will also be considered. 5 years of experience in a legal environment, with specific experience in wealth planning and/or probate and trust administration. Experience in income tax practice, with associated accounting and bookkeeping skills preferred. Ability to effectively, professionally and positively communicate with clients, attorneys and co-workers. Strong desire to learn. Strong reading comprehension and writing skills. Ability to work independently and manage heavy caseload. Professional demeanor and willingness to work proactively as part of a team. Detail-oriented. Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
