Litigation Paralegal Duties: Assists with the collection of material from client, opposing parties, and third parties (hard copies, electronic data, physical evidence). Maintains chain of custody. Tracks materials through the process. Designs and implements document review systems. Prepares privilege logs. Manages logistics of production of documents - hard copy, images, native. Analyzes documents and materials. Performs factual research. Compiles information into charts, graphs and timelines. Researches prior testimony and publications of opposing experts. Researches rules of procedure for relevant court venues, and assures adherence thereto. Researches local rules of procedure for relevant court venues, and assures adherence thereto; obtains information on the venue (e.g. judge s bio, prior decisions and opinions); obtains precedent from other cases in the venue. Drafts routine filings (e.g. attorney appearances, notices of filings, notices of motions). Checks legal cites for proper format, content and standing (Westlaw, Lexis; Blue Book). Researches and checks fact cites for proper format, content and accuracy (Blue Book). Compiles appendices and exhibits. Manages service of process; files with court and serves on parties; coordinates with local counsel. Interacts with outside entities (clients, government agencies, expert witnesses, consultants, other law firms, opposing parties, court personnel, etc.). Manages litigation support and information management systems. Makes relevant documents and information quickly and easily available to attorneys on the team. Designs and manages databases (Relativity, Concordance, Summation, Access, etc). Designs and manages transcript management systems (LiveNote). Designs and manages calendaring, task sharing, collaborative systems and extranets. Manages preparation of witness & subject files. Assists in preparation of witness outlines. Works with expert witnesses. Manages technical logistics for depositions (remote hookups, electronic transcripts, videography, synchronization). Manages trial and hearing preparation and support. Compiles and tracks trial exhibits. Prepares pretrial documents. Sets up and manages trial offices and trial support (e.g. remote office setup and logistics). Develops good relationship with Court Clerk, coordinating courtroom logistics with courthouse personnel. Assists in courtroom, anticipating needs of attorneys. Communicates with and coordinates witnesses, consultants, experts. Manages trial vendor support. Tracks exhibit admissions and, often, takes trial notes. Manages trial transcripts. Supervises legal staff. Obtains and supervises support from Firm departments (e.g. Litigation Support, Graphics Services, Purchasing, Trial Support Services). Manages relationships with supporting vendors (graphics, court reporters, trial support, hotels, etc.). Qualifications: 7+ years of experience that focuses on complex litigation cases, including managing large discovery, creating and managing databases and imaging systems, supervising teams, preparing for trial, and managing trial support. Must have high-level experience with a range of litigation support applications. Experience managing out-of-town trial offices for cases that have gone to verdict preferred by not required. Excellent analytical and organizational abilities, solid communication and management skills, creativity and initiative. Technical proficiency should include MS Office, Litigation Support Application, Legal Research software and E-filing tools.
