Ethics Attorney Duties: Under the supervision of the Assistant General Counsel for Ethics, and working with General Counsel Office, responsible for the timely and accurate identification and resolution of conflicts of interest and legal ethics issues to contribute to prompt client/matter openings and to ensure compliance with lawyers ethical obligations in multiple jurisdictions while protecting the firm and its clients from adversity and risk. Analyzing and seeking to clear conflicts of interest on new matter and new client engagements and lateral hires; evaluating non-standard terms to engagement letters and outside counsel guidelines; assisting in preparing conflicts waivers and engagement letters to address conflicts and other ethics issues; drafting and establishing ethical walls; and analyzing, researching, and answering legal ethics questions. Liaise with Partners regarding conflicts and ethics issues, as appropriate. Perform duties in coordination with the New Business Intake department to ensure a comprehensive and synchronized conflict-of-interest process. Perform other duties within the General Counsel Office involving legal ethics as requested. Works closely and regularly with the Assistant General Counsel for Ethics and the others within Group. Fulfill the needs of the Firm in a manner which is consistent with the Firm s Core Values. Review and analyze conflicts reports for conflicts clearing purposes, including communicating with responsible attorneys with pointed inquiries relating to conflicts and answer any questions with the goal of streamlining conflicts issues warranting input from individual partners. Communicate with responsible attorneys to determine the nature of the potential conflict and whether client consent may be obtained. Liaise with the New Business Intake department regarding corporate research and analysis of client and adverse entity identification, ownership, corporate affiliations, and conflicts of interests with the firm s former, current and prospective clients. Review and analyze conflicts of interest and track processes with respect to new clients and new matters and lateral attorneys. Respond to partner conflict inquiries on a firm-wide basis; interface with partners and associates to issue spot and resolve identified conflict issues. Resolve potential conflicts problems for attorneys firmwide. Participate in lateral lawyer intake process as it pertains to conflicts. Assist in communicating firm policies and procedures relating to conflicts and intake, making recommendations for changes when appropriate. Assist partners in drafting conflicts waivers and written communications to clients concerning conflicts or other ethics issues. Assist in reviewing non-standard terms to engagement letters. Draft and establish ethical walls. Analyze, research, and answer legal ethics questions timely and accurately. Develop expertise on conflicts and ethics rules and body of law in multiple jurisdictions and approaches in specific practice areas. Possess, maintain and expand knowledge in the substantive field of legal ethics and professional responsibility. Assist with individual or group projects involving legal ethics issues. Research and communicate orally and in writing answers to the issues posed and recommend resolutions as appropriate. Assist Assistant General Counsel for Ethics as Develop and maintain expertise in department s technologies and all other applications that are necessary to expertly perform job requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: JD Degree with 3+ years of experience in a law firm setting. Experience in conflicts clearing and/or ethics required. Ability to read, write and speak English. Excellent research and analytical skills. Proficiency in legal database (Lexis and Westlaw) and internet research, including but not limited to Hoovers, Dun & Bradstreet, Thomson and other corporate databases. Superior written communication skills. Superior interpersonal skills, including strong oral communication skills and the ability to communicate potentially detailed and complex information to others. Proficient knowledge of large firm practice areas: financial organizations, private equity firms and other business organizations. Unfailing commitment to confidentiality of firm, department and client information. Demonstrated strong knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to learn and utilize specialized conflict checking software and multiple software applications and workflow processes of various departments. Aptitude and willingness to work with complex procedures. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities in a professional manner. Ability to work independently and with a team. Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel in a global market with tact and diplomacy. Willingness and ability to assume new tasks and responsibilities. Excellent judgment and common sense. Strong service orientation, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, peers, office and firm management, and outside business partners. Ability to work well under pressure, facilitate solutions, and meet deadlines and milestones. Ability to work extended hours as necessary to fulfill time sensitive responsibilities.
