Paralegal Maritime Duties: To provide paralegal and administrative support to the attorneys of the firm or any supervisory personnel, including, but not limited to, management. Follows the ethical requirements as set forth by the Louisiana Bar Association Rules of Professional Conduct. Collects, analyzes, organizes, and maintains factual information and documents in accordance with correct legal practice and procedure. May prepare pleadings, draft and answer interrogatories, and respond to requests to produce documents under the supervision of the assigned attorney. Performs cite checking/editing of briefs as requested. Manages, records, and organizes all discovery and trial data, including creation and maintenance of folders and sub-folders. Establishes, organizes, and maintains attorney trial notebooks, expert witness records, document indexes, and databases. Reviews and analyzes cases in order to assist in preparation of case for trial. Summarizes testimony and transcripts. Obtains, analyzes, and summarizes medical records. Assists in locating and preparing witnesses for trial; obtains and organizes trial exhibits; and coordinates witnesses appearance at trial. Assists in drafting releases and motions. Develops a knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and procedures in specific areas of law. Develops and maintains a working relationship with clients and expert witnesses in order to ensure the expeditious gathering, analysis, and presentation of facts and information necessary to support litigation activities. Conducts factual research using online and traditional source. Locates witnesses and performs light interviewing. Maintains extensive contact with vendors to support hard copy and electronic record management activities and hearing/trial preparation. Assists in courtroom as requested. Keeps accurate time records. Assist in secretarial needs as dictated by work loads and client demand. Other duties as required or determined by a supervisor as needed. Qualifications: Relevant vocational training plus 1-2 years experience, or equivalent. High School diploma necessary, Paralegal certificate preferred. Good organizational skills, excellent grammar and spelling, typing of minimum 60+ wpm, and other general computer skills. Ability to work overtime occasionally and at the last minute; ability to work in a team environment. Dependable, self-starter, professional demeanor and appearance. Familiarity/experience with state and federal courts and Office of Administrative Law Judges preferred. Knowledge: Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office software packages; exposure to document management, calendaring, spreadsheets, legal forms, legal documentation, medical records and terminology, and formal correspondence. Must have basic knowledge of office machinery, including, copiers, scanners, transcription/dictation devices/software, and various on-line services and resources.
