Bankruptcy Paralegal The candidate will report directly to the Director of the firms bankruptcy department. Must be an experienced ECF filer with the bankruptcy court and have a good working knowledge of all aspects of bankruptcy court proceedings. The responsibilities of this position involve handling telephone inquiries from debtors with active bankruptcy cases, reviewing and electronically filing proofs of claim for creditors and monitoring and assisting in bankruptcy court litigation. Core function will be to prepare proofs of claim and to ensure claim is correctly completed for filing. This review includes data entry as to the amounts making up the account balance (i.e. principal, interest and fees), a review of attached account statements to confirm that there is a matching account balance on statement for amount asserted in proof of claim and other documents required per the Bankruptcy Code and Rules. Once this review is completed the proof of claim will be filed electronically with the bankruptcy court. Secondary responsibility will be answering a dedicated toll-free telephone number set up for debtors to contact our office regarding any issues arising from their bankruptcy filing (i.e. there is an active bank levy, active wage garnishment, etc.) and responding appropriately. Finally this employee will monitor any active bankruptcy litigation being handled by the firm (i.e. Adversary Proceedings, Violations of the Automatic Stay, etc.) and assist in these proceedings. Must be experienced ECF filer in the bankruptcy court. Must possess a good understanding of bankruptcy court proceedings and practice. Must be experienced using Excel spreadsheets. Should have 1-3 years prior experience working with an attorney or firm handling bankruptcy practice. Must be very familiar with ECF filing and understand how to navigate the bankruptcy court electronic filing system. Must have a good understanding of bankruptcy court practice and proceedings - especially the application of the Automatic Stay with regards to collection activity. Must be able to handle inbound phone calls from debtors and spot any issues or problems so that the firm or our clients do not violate the Automatic stay. Prior experience working as a bankruptcy paralegal representing creditors is preferred.
