Paralegal - Family Law Responsibilities: Arranging mediation or expert evaluations in various litigation matters. Contributing to trial preparation in litigation practices. Providing behind-the-scenes support in the courtroom at hearings and trials, or in arbitration, mediation, administrative proceedings, and closings. Drafting legal documents and pleadings, including deposition notices, subpoenas, motions, certifications, contracts, briefs, and complaints. Investigating the facts of a case by interviewing clients and witnesses and performing legal research into case law and precedents. Handling discovery the exchange of certain information between opposing parties to a lawsuit. Organizing and managing files, documents, and exhibits. Filing documents with federal and state courts. Calendar all deadlines and court appearances. Occasionally schedule initial consultations.. Occasionally greet and welcome guests as soon as they arrive at the office. Occasionally direct visitors to the appropriate person and/or office. Occasionally screen and forward incoming phone calls. Provide basic and accurate information in-person and via phone/email. Occasionally receive, sort and distribute daily mail/deliveries. Occasionally perform other clerical receptionist duties such as filing, photocopying, transcribing and faxing. Occasionally schedule 1st time service appointments for new clients. Be fluent in Microsoft Office programs. Perform the legal work expected of them, to the level of quality expected of an attorney, executing such tasks to the highest quality standards. Assist attorneys in working case from start to finish. Draft pleadings, discovery, and correspondence. Communicate with clients regarding status of their case. Communicate with clients to obtain information/ documents needed. Appropriately calendar discovery deadlines and timely prepare responses. Appropriately calendar deadlines for appeals. Create Production Control Logs for incoming and outgoing discovery responses. Assist in preparation for and attendance at trial and hearings. Assist in preparation for depositions and mediations. Maintain minimum billable hours requirement. Work closely with other staff to ensure timely completion of all tasks. Coordinating and scheduling hearings, mediations, depositions, and client meetings. Scheduling court reporters, expert witnesses, and other special functions. Drafting Notices and other pleadings related to scheduling. Revising dictated correspondence and pleadings from attorneys. Recording and monitoring court appearances, pleadings related to scheduled events, and tracking deadlines. Keeping clients informed of all scheduled events. Receiving all potential new client calls and scheduling new client consultations. Inputting attorney's billable time and e-filing pleadings. Requirements: Previous law firm experience (family law firm experience a plus). Certification preferred. Work experience as a Paralegal or similar role (we are also willing to train the right candidate). Quick learning, high energy, quick adaptability. Able to work through high stress situations. Ability to work heavy case load with minimal direction/supervision. Pleasant and professional tone in person, on the phone, and through e-mail. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and accuracy of grammar and spelling. Organization, planning, and prioritization. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Secretarial and legal administration skills. Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Adobe, Outlook. Knowledge of Clio Some local travel required (e.g. travel to courthouse to file documents). Professional attitude and appearance. Solid written and verbal communication skills. Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise. Excellent organizational skills. Multitasking and time-management skills. Phone Skills.
